![]() We must deal drastically with our sins, even if it means a great inconvenience to ourselves. This is Jesus’ whole point in Matthew 18:7–9 when He tells us to cut off our hand or foot or to pluck out our eye if any of them is causing us to sin. Instead of toying with our sins, we need to deal drastically with them. We are playing with fire, and we will be burned. This means that when we toy with our sins and refuse to put them to death, we show the truthfulness of Proverbs 6:27. It keeps us from sensing God’s grace and favor. It keeps us from seeing that God really is for us in Christ. Sin, according to Owen, is a thick black cloud that envelops our souls and blocks out the beams of God’s grace and favor toward us. The Puritan theologian John Owen, in his helpful treatise On the Mortification of Sin, argues that when we coddle our sins and fail to put them to death, we are in effect hurting ourselves. We hold them close, because we like them too much. Rather than taking drastic action to deal with our sins, we coddle them. We do this by entertaining our sins and toying with them instead of putting them to death at the first opportunity. We know better.īut the very thing that we would not dream of doing in everyday life, we do with regularity in our Christian lives. No one would dream of actually doing this-unless, of course, he was looking to be burned. At 14 years old he was severely burned while playing with matches and gasoline. The card also introduces Gordon Pranger, who began playing with fire at a young age. They might also face mandatory educational, psychological, or therapy programs. Like having a permanent criminal record or being sent to a detention center. The fires setters who don’t go to jail will face other consequences. Penalties are strict and some juveniles may be tried as adults. And while children mistakenly believe that they can control the fires they set, a single match can set an entire room on fire in just two minutes and an entire house in five minutes. In fact, almost half of all deliberately set fires are started by youths under the age of 18. One that is frequently met with jail time and thousands of dollars in fines.
